SMART RECOVERY
SMART Recovery is a science-based program that offers tools for building motivation, managing urges, regulating emotions, and creating a balanced life. Instead of using a 12-step framework, SMART focuses on cognitive-behavioral techniques and self-empowerment strategies. Meetings are available online and in person, making it accessible for anyone seeking practical, skills-focused support for addiction or habit change. This is a great option for individuals who prefer a non-spiritual, skills-based approach to recovery.
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) & Narcotics Anonymous (NA)
AA and NA are long-standing 12-step fellowship programs offering peer-based support for individuals working toward recovery from alcohol or substance use. Meetings emphasize connection, accountability, and spiritual growth (in a higher-power framework defined by the individual). These fellowships provide a sense of community, sponsorship mentorship, and decades of collective experience. Many people find AA/NA helpful for structure, consistency, and shared understanding with others who have lived through similar challenges.
Al-Anon & Nar-Anon
Al-Anon and Nar-Anon provide support for loved ones of individuals struggling with addiction. These programs help family members understand boundaries, detach with love, and build healthier communication and emotional patterns. They offer a compassionate community for those navigating the complex dynamics of supporting someone with substance use challenges while maintaining their own well-being.
Refuge Recovery
Refuge Recovery (aka Dharma Recovery) is a Buddhist-inspired, trauma-sensitive recovery program rooted in mindfulness, compassion, and the Four Noble Truths. Meetings focus on meditation, grounding practices, and developing insight into cravings, suffering, and emotional pain. This program is especially helpful for those who value mindfulness, spirituality without dogma, and a compassionate, nonjudgmental community. It can be a meaningful complement to therapy, particularly for individuals seeking a reflective and holistic path to recovery.
Celebrate Recovery
Celebrate Recovery is a Christian-based, 12-step–inspired recovery program that addresses a wide range of struggles, including addiction, trauma, relationship issues, and codependency. This approach integrates prayer, faith, and biblical principles with group support and accountability. Celebrate Recovery is often a supportive environment for individuals who want to incorporate their Christian faith into the recovery process and connect with a spiritual community.
Recovery Dharma (Peer-Led Version)
Separate from Dharma Recovery's organizational structure, Recovery Dharma is another widely used, peer-led recovery community based on Buddhist practices. It emphasizes empowerment, self-determination, and healing through meditation, wisdom, and compassion. Many people find it grounding, especially when paired with mindfulness-based therapy.
